About the Classes Basic Classes: These classes are for beginners through Green Belt level. We here at East Side Tae Kwon Do teach Tae Kwon Do in its truest form: as a martial art. This means that kids will get both physical and mental benefits from taking our classes. Physical Benefits: Tae Kwon Do develops a child’s stamina, core muscle strength and flexibility. It also develops balance, agility and co-ordination. Mental Benefits: Tae Kwon Do is a mind-body discipline, which means classes at Tae Kwon Do do much more than just teach your child a sport. Martial arts teach discipline and perseverance. They help your child develop her/his body awareness and mental acuity. Most importantly, regular practice of a martial art fosters self confidence and peace of mind.
Advanced Classes: This is our Black Belt Training program, which is appropriate for Green Belts and higher. This is a serious class for kids that want to get their Black Belts (or Poom Belts if they are under 15 years old) within four years of starting Tae Kwon Do.
“18 months to 2 years is a rich time for the development of Gross Motor skills through play activities. Tae Kwon Do at this age provides many opportunities to facilitate gross motor development in a fun and safe environment.” - Carol Stillman PT, Owner, Sutton Place Physical Therapy These special classes are designed for kids 18 months-3 years old. These are not separated classes, so each child must have a caregiver participate with her/him. Class sizes are small, with no more that 8 kids per class. Kids participate in drills that work on their balance, co-ordination, agility, flexibility and mind/body awareness. Developing core muscle strength is emphasized. They learn basic kicks, practice meditating and are gently introduced to martial arts discipline and self-control. They learn to function in a classroom setting while having a great deal of fun!
These classes are specifically designed for 3-4 year olds. Kids learn the basic skills they will need to advance to a regular Tae Kwon Do class when they turn 5 years old. They learn the three basic kicks: front kick, axe kick and roundhouse kick and basic hand techniques: punches, chops and strikes. They also work on their balance, flexibility, strength and co-ordination. They learn to meditate and about self-control. We take the discipline up a notch in this class, and kids are expected to participate in class without talking or playing around. However, we make the class fun for them too so they become highly motivated and look forward to attending each session.
